Green Is Good! Run for the reforestation of Ipo Watershed The UP Mountaineers, through its Environment Committee and the Padyak Foundation presents: The 2009 GiG Run. A run to raise awareness on the need to protect the Ipo Watershed. The run is expected to jump start the growing consciousness of protecting the Ipo Watershed that, together with Angat Watershed, supply 97 percent of Metro Manila’s fresh water. The watershed is currently experiencing heavy environment pressure as population encroach the area. Seventy percent of the watershed is heavily deforested thus causing silt deposits on the Angat River that carries water to the Ipo Dam. The proceeds of the race will be utilized for the continuing program of the U.P. Mountaineers to bring back the lush green environment that once was the Ipo Watershed. Stay tuned for registration details. If you're going to run that day, run for a worthy cause! Let's run for the forest, run! For more info, email ask@thegigrun.org or go to www.thegigrun.org | | April 3-6, 2009. Mt. Pulag, Bokod, Benguet. Ambangeg-Ambangeg trail. UP Mountaineers Talikasan. SWEET SWEET SUNRISE. AWESOME SEA OF CLOUDS.
Gusto ko magpasalamat sa lahat ng participants at myembro na sumama ngayong Talikasan. Ang swerte natin sa panahon. Sana nag-enjoy kayong lahat!
Thank you to all the people in Manila (and elsewhere :P) who kept praying and wishing us good weather. Except for slight rain when we arrived at the campsite and the rainstorm going home, we had the best weather anyone can ask for.
Also, thank you to all the people who made this trip possible. From the GLs (Ed, Tan, Fish, Ellaine, Kiko, Glenn) to Ina's group (sorry uli sa sociaaaaaaaaaallss!!), to the behind-the-scenes crew (Naomi, Dan, Dennis, Bruce, etc), to the people we borrowed equipment from, to everyone's support and prayers, etc!
Personal notes: Napakabigat ng bag ko nun. Whew! At ang spiritual ng experience na to. Haha. Dramz. Redemption is SWEET.

Congratulations sa ating lahat! Mabuhay UPM! |
Don't settle for the run-of-the-mill resort outings and generic beach excursions. The UP Mountaineers have prepared loads of trips to not-your-usual summer destinations. Explore the Philippines and sleep under the stars, along the beach, or in icy-cold weather! Join the Talikasan Open Climbs! We got your summer covered: Mt. Pinatubo Location: Sta. Juliana, Capas, Tarlac Date: March 28-29, 2009 Max Participants: - REGISTRATION CLOSED - Cost: P2,300 Activity: Hike, swim, camp out Brief Description: Once a deep forest inhabited only by Aetas, Mt. Pinatubo transformed into a vast crater lake left by a massive eruption in 1991; and the terrain is still changing over time. The crater is accessible by 4x4 jeep and a 3-hour hike. Best photographed early in the morning. Mt. Pulag National Park Date: April 3-6, 2009 Max Participants: 30 persons Cost: P2,700 Activity: Hike, camp out Brief Description: This is the highest and coldest place in Luzon. It is one of the most popular hiking destinations because of its diverse flora and fauna, the near-freezing conditions, and the breath-taking sunrise, which greets lucky visitors. Travel time from Manila is about 10-12 hours. Hiking time is 3 hours to camp and another 1.5 hours to the summit. Daraitan River Location: General Nakar, Quezon via Tanay, Rizal Date: April 4-5, 2009 Max Participants: 20 persons Cost: P1,000 Activity: Hike, river crossing, swim, camp out, caving Brief Description: Lush forests and cool waterfalls will make summer a little more pleasant. All the perks of the backcountry at a stone's throw distance from Metro Manila. Part of the Daraitan River System, traversing the Towns of Tanay and Jala-jala in Rizal and General Nakar in Quezon. The parts that we are going to are only accesible during summer since the campsite and the mini-caves are submerged in water during the rainy season. Bagsit River Location: Palauig, Zambales Date: Late April or Early May 2009 Max Participants: 25 persons Cost: TBA Activity: Hike, river crossing, swim, camp out Brief Description: Located somewhere in Zambales, Bagsit River remains to be one of the cleanest river in the country. Its beauty is now under serious threat as the re-opening of a mining complex nearby and the construction of an inter-province highway along its banks will definitely alter its pristine state. The 3-4 hour trek is open primarily to students, whom we hope would acquire a better understanding of how progress affects nature. Visit it now before it's forever lost. Mt. Daguldol Location: Bgy. Hugom, San Juan, Batangas Date: May 9-10, 2009 Max Participants: 35 persons Cost: TBA Activity: Hike, swim, beach, camp out Brief Description: Mt. Daguldol is one of the few mountain destinations relatively close to Metro Manila where you can bask in the mountain air and then frolic at the beach all in the same weekend. It is only 3 hours away from the congested streets and dirty air of the city. It has a wide campsite and various observation points where you can sea parts of Batangas and the nearby provinces and islands, depending on your vantage point. Banahaw de Kalbaryo Traverse and Pandin Lake Location: Laguna and Quezon Date: May 9-10, 2009 Max Participants: 30 persons Cost: TBA Activity: Hike, swim, camp out Brief Description: Climb Banahaw's minor peak, enter it's sacred caves, and bathe amidst its falls... after everything's said and done, take a refreshing dip and swim in the middle of picturesque Pandin lake! UP Mountaineers Talikasan 2009 Mount Pulag (Ambangeg - Ambangeg)The highest and coldest place in Luzon needs no introduction.
The UP Mountaineers (Batch 2007) invites you to join the Talikasan Open Climb in Mt. Pulag. This is your chance to enjoy really cold weather before the summer heat fries the country to a crisp.
Registration fee is P2,700, which covers transportation, local fees, equipment (tents and cookware), camp meals (dinner, breakfast and lunch), and an event T-shirt.
Only 30 participants will be accepted. So Hurry!
Fore more information and to reserve your slot email Tan at tancuenca@yahoo.com or tan@neversleepers.com or text 0929-7928471 or Lei at 0922-8384578. Registration forms will be emailed upon request.
About the hike:
1. The summit of Mt. Pulag from the trailhead is about 8.7 kilometers (or a walking time of 5-6 hours for novice hikers with minimal equipment).
2. Do not be intimidated by the distance. The team will only cover half the way to the summit on the first day and camp for the night. The team will then wake up very early in the morning and start the hike to the summit to catch the first rays of the sun for a majestic photo-session.
3. Since this is the highest point in Luzon, the air is thinner and the temperature colder. Participants will be briefed on what to do and bring during the trip.
4. For the complete outdoor experience, participants will have the chance to join in doing camp chores and activities like setting up tents and cooking.
5. While this is the "easiest" route available, it may still be physically challenging for some. Simple exercises and cardio-vascular workouts (like jogging or walking) prior to the trip would help tremendously in making the trip more enjoyable.
6. More information will be available to the participants during the pre-climb meeting on a time and venue to be announced at a later date.
Terms and Conditions 1. It is understood that the participants have joined the trip on their own volition. All adult participants will be required to sign a safety waiver. Minors (17 and below) will need to have their waivers signed by a parent or guardian.
2. For safety reasons and limited camping space, we will be limiting the number of participants to 30. Priority will be given to UP students.
3. To reserve a slot, make an advanced payment of P1000 (nonrefundable for cancellations after March 31, 2009). You can make a deposit to this account:
BPI Account name: Ellaine Grace L. Nagpala Account number: 3379-0168-11 Branch: Visayas Avenue
E-mail a scanned copy of the marked deposit slip to tancuenca@yahoo.com or tan@neversleepers.com
4. We will send you an email once we confirm receipt of your payment.
5. Participants must attend the Pre-Climb Meeting.
